English as a Second Language

ESLA 010 ESL Foundations 1 (Ends Dec 2011)

Students will study an integrated curriculum. Their oral skills will allow them to understand general meaning and feel more confident when speaking about familiar topics. Their writing skills will develop so that students are beginning to write in paragraphs. ESLA 010 was formerly called ESLA 001; credit will not be granted for both courses.

Prerequisite: ESL assessment.

ESLA 010 ESL Academic Preparation 1 (Effective Jan 2012)

Students will actively practice all aspects of English and focus on enhancing academic English with communication skills. The goal of this course is to develop knowledge, skills, and confidence in English.

Prerequisite: ESL assessment test.

ESLA 020 ESL Academic Preparation 2 (Effective Jan 2012)

ESL Academic Preparation 2 is a course which integrates the four skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students will actively practice all aspects of English and focus on enhancing academic English with communication skills. The goal of this course is to develop knowledge, skills, and confidence in English.

Prerequisite: ESL assessment test.

ESLA 030 Academic Preparation 3

There is a concentration on academic reading, writing, and an introduction to literature. Some students will be able to take specified academic courses and others will take a series of modules on specific skills. A passing grade in Academic Preparation 5 will allow students direct entry to VIU programs without further English testing.

Prerequisite: ESL assessment test.

ESLA 040 Academic Preparation 4

There is a concentration on academic reading, writing, and an introduction to literature. Some students will be able to take specified academic courses and others will take a series of modules on specific skills. ESLC 010 Communications 1 - Developing Skills (Ends Dec 2011)

Students will learn about Canadian life through interactive activities, short readings, field trips, and conversations about Canadians. The course focuses on learning to use useful expressions and vocabulary related to life in Canada. Students will use all language skills, with an emphasis on developing oral communication skills. ESLC 010 was formerly called ESLC 001; credit will not be granted for both courses.

Prerequisite: None.

ESLC 010 Access - Developing Skills (Effective Jan 2012)

Students will acquire basic English language skills that will prepare them for either the Academic Preparation Program or the Communications Program. There will be an emphasis on developing oral and written language skills. ESLC 010 was formerly called ESLC 001; credit will not be granted for both courses.

Prerequisite: ESL assessment test.

ESLC 015 Communications 2 - Intermediate Skills

Students will practice and extend listening and speaking skills, with opportunity to develop all language skills, with an emphasis on developing oral communication and confidence. Oriented to intermediate level learners, the course provides interactive activities featuring Canadian and cross-cultural communication, including various presentation venues, as well as drama and debates.

Prerequisite: ESLC 010 or ESL Assessment.

ESLC 020 Communications 3 - Advanced Skills

Students will study all language skills, but will focus specifically on oral/aural skills. The course emphasizes development of listening, speaking, presentation, and critical thinking skills, both in and out of the classroom through interactive activities, including community volunteer work.

Prerequisite: ESLC 015, or ESL assessment.
