During the day instruction is given on the techniques used to safely move around in the backcountry, avalanche precautions, and terrain selection. VIU has cross country ski gear that we use for this trip, so we will not be ripping any steep power runs on our tour. Instead this trip is gentle tour that is more instructional and scenic in nature. Avalanche Awareness Day Trip
The avalanche awareness trip is run over 2 consecutive weekend days and explores the avalanche phenomenon. On both days the group travels up to Mt. Washington Resort and utilizes the terrain around the Raven Lodge as our teaching location. Students are instructed on the use of avalanche beacons (transceiver), how to conduct a beacon search, avalanche terrain identification, slope stability tests, safe route finding techniques, snow pit profiles, and mountain weather as it relates to avalanches. This is a great course for students who are interested in backcountry skiing/boarding and who find themselves riding out of bounds. The course is very instructive and the information serves as a solid foundation for later courses in avalanche awareness. Cost includes all equipment, instruction, and transportation.
