What You Should Know:

Are You On A Wait List?

Register early to secure your seat. If you see the “On Wait List” comment on your Registration Statement, this means that a course is full and you have been “Wait Listed”. No payment is required to go on the “Wait List”. If a seat becomes available in this current semester, you will be contacted to process your registration and payment.

Textbooks and Supplies

Please check your Registration Statement and enclosed Student Text and Supplies List (if applicable) for required textbooks and supplies. Textbooks are not available for purchase until the course is confirmed – one week before the class begins. If you are unsure about the status of your course, please call our office. Textbooks are available for purchase at the campus where the course is held. Call to confirm that texts are in stock. For current hours and information visit http://www.viubookstore.ca/

Parking

Nanaimo Campus:
Pay parking is in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including evenings and weekends. Robbins Parking Services Ltd., in partnership with Westguard Security Services Inc., patrol parking lots, enforce parking regulations and provide security services at the Nanaimo Campus. The Parking/Security office is located in Building 161, and is open 9 am – 3 pm, Mondays to Fridays. Call 250- 740-6512 or visit the website http://www.viu.ca/parking/index.asp

Parksville/Qualicum Centre:
Parking at the Parksville/Qualicum Centre is free.

Cowichan Campus:
Parking at the Cowichan Campus is free. Please do not park at the Quw'ut'sun Cultural Centre as you may be towed.

Cafeteria Service

Nanaimo Campus:

  • Upper Cafeteria – Building 300.
  • Lower Cafeteria – Building 185.

Hours are subject to change. There is no weekend cafeteria service. Coin-operated vending machines are available at various locations. Call 250- 740-6136 or visit www.viu.ca/foodservices/index.asp

Parksville/Qualicum Centre:
Coin-operated vending machines are available at the Parksville/Qualicum Centre.

Cowichan Campus:
There is no cafeteria service in the evenings and on weekends. Coin-operated vending machines are available at the Cowichan Campus.

Refunds

For most courses, fees are refundable if you withdraw at least 7 days before the course starts. Extenuating circumstances may be considered for partial refunds. Please contact our office. Note that special refund deadlines are stated for some courses, and we are unable to issue refunds after those deadlines.
Non-Refundable Fees:
Some courses may have non-refundable Tuition, Application, and/or Lab Fees.
A full refund is issued if a course is cancelled.

Course Cancellations and Changes

Courses may be cancelled due to low enrolment or changed for various reasons. Every effort is made to notify you. Please provide your day and evening telephone numbers and your email address when you register, in case we need to reach you. A full refund is issued if a course is cancelled.

Check Your Registration Statement

Please read your Registration Statement receipt carefully. It confirms your registration and contains details of class time, location and room number. Please note your 9-digit Student Number in the upper left-hand corner and quote this Student Number when registering for future courses. Your Student Number allows us to correctly identify you and to ensure that your Student Record is complete.

Student Record Information

You can access your Student Record http://records.viu.ca/reg/htbin/weblogin You will need your 9-digit Student Number and your Personal Identification Number (PIN). If you need assistance, please call our office.

Admission

Continuing Education courses are designed for adults (17 years and over), unless otherwise stated for a specific course. Admission to younger students is by special arrangement. Please call our office.

Snow Closure

It is sometimes necessary to close due to weather conditions. Please note that closure decisions are made independently at each campus. The Vancouver Island University main switchboard 250-753-3245 or Toll Free 1-888-920-2221 will carry a recorded message announcing any closures starting at 6:00 am. Please monitor the Vancouver Island University website www.viu.ca and local TV and radio stations for closure updates.

Disability Services

Please call our office to discuss arrangements to accommodate disabilities. Every effort will be made to accommodate individual needs, but early notification of a required service is essential. Sixty days’ notice is normally required to guarantee that your accommodation request will be fulfilled prior to the start of a desired course or program. Services for Aboriginal Students Centre

The Services for Aboriginal Students Centre supports First Nations students in making a successful transition to Vancouver Island University and enables students to succeed in their academic endeavors by providing direct services and appropriate referrals. International Students

International students interested in a Contiuning Education Certificate Program must apply through the Director of International Admissions. Note that International Fees apply. Why We Request Birthdate And Gender

We require personal information as authorized by the College and Institute Act to:

  • Verify the Personal Identification Number (PIN) for each student.
  • Carry out institutional responsibilities related to operating programs or activities.
  • Prepare and submit budgets, financial statements, reports and other information necessary to carry out the Minister’s responsibilities to institutions.
  • Conduct institutional research and statistical analysis.

Replacement Certificates or Letters of Attendance

Replacement Certificates or Letters of Attendance can be requested. A $10 service fee is charged. Allow 2 weeks to process.

NSF (Non-Sufficient Funds) Cheques

Fees are payable when you register. A $25 fee will be charged for NSF cheques.
