The Next Steps After Applying
Pay Tuition
A letter and invoice advising the total amount of tuition and homestay fees
payable, and how and when to pay will be sent.
Once tuition fees are paid, an Official Letter of Acceptance and Statutory Declaration of guardianship as well as further information about studying at Malaspina High School and living in Nanaimo will be sent.
Obtain Student Authorization
All students must obtain a Student Permit from the Canadian
Embassy or Consulate in the country where the student resides. When
in Canada, it is the student's responsibility to keep the Student
Authorization updated and current. Student Authorizations must be
renewed six weeks before the expiry date and may be renewed in Canada.
To attain this document, students must provide the Embassy with:
-
the official Letter of Acceptance from Malaspina High School stating that the required fees have been paid;
-
a bank statement indicating that the student or parents have sufficient funds to support the student's period of study;
-
a Guardianship Letter, notarized and signed by the Principal of the school
Malaspina High School will issue a letter as proof of registration for those students who will be continuing their studies at the High School. The Immigration authorities have the right to inquire about a student's record of attendance and achievement at school. If attendance or achievement has been poor, a student may be refused renewal of the Student Authorization. This may require the student to leave Canada.
Please note: For a period less than 6 months, students will only need a visitor's visa. International students may attend only the school named on the Authorization.
Guardianship
All students under 19 years of age are required by Canada Immigration
to have a legal guardian who is a Canadian citizen and resides in
Canada. The school Principal provides guardianship
to students. Parents should check with the Canadian Embassy or Consulate
in their country of residence for specific guardianship requirements.
Medical Insurance
The Government of British Columbia requires all international students
to have medical and accident insurance while studying in British
Columbia. Proof of medical insurance is required. The cost is approximately
$750 (Cdn) per year and will be invoiced when a student applies to attend Malaspina High School. Students may use their own insurance provider, but must show proof (in English) of valid medical insurance coverage.
Refund Policy
- The Application Fee and Homestay Placement Fees (if placement is completed) are non-refundable.
- All requests for refunds must be in writing.
- A full refund of all fees (except those noted in No. 1 above) will be paid only if a Study Permit is refused by Immigration Canada. In order to receive this refund, the student must submit to Malaspina High School a letter of rejection from Immigration Canada authorities as proof of the refusal.
- A full refund of tuition and supplies fees minus a $500 administration fee will be paid for the first year of study if written notification is received by the High School Principal 60 days before commencement of the student's first Quarter.
- A full refund of tuition and supplies fees minus a $500 administration fee will be paid in the second and subsequent years of study if fees have been paid for quarters in which the student does not enroll in courses, provided that notice to withdraw from these courses is received in writing by the school Principal 60 days before commencement of the quarter. In such cases, refunds will be at the rate of tuition and supplies fees paid for that quarter less the $500 administration fee.
- There is no refund of fees if a student:
- is found to be in serious contravention of school rules and is asked to leave the school (for example - chronic, unexplained absenteeism; consuming alcohol or drugs at school or while in a homestay situation; demonstrating behaviour which impacts negatively on Malaspina High School or Vancouver Island University);
- decides to withdraw from school at any time during the first year (four quarters) of study at Malaspina High School;
- has been removed from two homestay placements for violation of the Homestay Policy.
- If a student withdraws or is dismissed from Malaspina High School and does not complete the program, the balance of the homestay fees paid will be refunded after any outstanding homestay fees have been paid to the homestay family.
- The laws of the Province of British Columbia apply.
All requests for refunds not covered by the above must be submitted in writing to the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Malaspina High School.
