Academic Excellence
All teachers have university degrees and British Columbia teaching certificates. They stress academic excellence to give students a firm foundation for achieving their future educational and career goals. The High School seeks to instill in students personal qualities of leadership, diligence and self-reliance and helps them to develop inter-cultural communication skills and attitudes to become world citizens and to develop friendships in a multicultural setting.
Campus Lifestyle
Malaspina High School (MHS) is part of a unique learning community in Canada. Although MHS is a private high school, it shares facilities, resources and instruction with Vancouver Island University, a public university of 18,000 students. MHS is the only learning model of its kind in Canada and provides opportunities for MHS students to use university labs, libraries and technology as learning tools within a nurturing high school environment. It also involves students from the high school in the university community and encourages university involvement in the high school. Classes are taught by dedicated British Columbia certified teachers in an intimate setting with no more than 15 students in each class.
Active Learning and Leadership
Malaspina High School students learn inside and outside of the classroom, gaining practical, real-world experiences. Leadership practice involves students in community leadership opportunities and exposes them to problem-solving and project management. A Peer Helper program develops interpersonal skills by teaching students how to mentor other MHS students.
Mildest Climate in Canada
Vancouver Island has been rated one of the most popular island destinations in the world to live and visit. The climate is mild year-round and the city of Nanaimo is centrally located for easy access to Vancouver and the provincial capital of Victoria. Being a smaller city, Nanaimo is a friendly and caring place to live. The Malaspina campus of Vancouver Island University is located next to an Olympic-sized swimming pool, 2 ice rinks, and several playing fields.
