History
This Committee was formed in fiscal year 2005/2006 to support student scholarships and awards granted from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Each year VIU receives a quota to nominate students for two awards; the CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarship - Master's award (CIHR CGS-M) and the Health Professional Student Research Awards (HPSRA) intended for undergraduates. It is mandated that VIU conduct an internal selection process for both awards.
The CIHR CGS-M award competition starts in September upon the arrival of the CGS announcement from CIHR. Following the announcement, the chair and the support staff review the guidelines and prepare and distribute the competition announcement for the students. If required, the Committee will have an information update/planning meeting to review the guidelines. The selection meeting is scheduled approximately 2 weeks after the internal competition deadline to nominate student(s) to compete nationally for a CIHR scholarship. After the internal selection process the application(s) are forwarded to CIHR and will undergo a national selection process. The results of the award are announced in July and recipients of this award receive $17,500 for the first year of their Master's studies.
The HPSRA announcement arrives in May/June. Once again, upon the arrival of the package the competition announcement will be prepared and distributed. If required, an information update/planning meeting is scheduled. This award is available for nursing students who have completed their first year of studies. VIU currently receives two awards each for $4,251, which upon the Committee’s discretion can be divided into multiple awards. The purpose of this award is to provide students the opportunity to conduct a research project of their choice in order to gain more experience within the research field. Once the Committee has selected the successful recipient’s details are then submitted to CIHR to verify eligibility.
